Modern March

Friday Night Magic is normally draft night at Big Dog Books, but with the Rivals of Ixalan season drawing to an end we’re mixing things up with a few different events. The first of these was a Modern Constructed tournament where there were some serious prizes – including a whole box of Master 25th Edition Boosters for the top winner!

What is Modern?

Technically speaking, Modern is a constructed format that allows expansion sets and core sets from Eighth Edition forward, save for the Modern ban list – that only tells part of the story though. Modern has a huge cardpool and a massive range of viable, fun, and highly skill-intensive decks. It makes for exciting and highly interactive games and the wide range of options available in the format mean there’s a deck for every playstyle.

Modern uses the normal rules of 60 card minimum main deck, 15 card sideboard, with no more than 4 copies of any one card across both parts of the deck,

Decks on the night

Here’s what the players were running on the night:

  • Breach – cheats massive creatures into play for single devastating turns
  • Elves – deck based around the mana-producing capabilities of Elves to ramp into huge cards quickly
  • 4c Humans – uses the overlapping bonuses of small creatures to create a large army
  • Blistering Paradise – relies on cantrips and low cmc spells to burn through their deck outracing their opponent
  • Burn – Full of direct damage, seeks to kill the opponent before they can get a board presence
  • Jund – the classic midrange deck, has answers for everything and plays extremely powerful spells
  • Illusions – tribal deck based on the now-you-see-them-now-you-don’t nature of blue illusion creatures
  • Minotaurs – aggro deck based on Black/Red big creatures and removal
  • Mill – wins by grinding the opponents library away and depriving them of answers
  • Cats – tribal deck that uses Green / White cats to cover the battlefield in tokens, hexproof creatures, and lifegain
  • Boggles – a deck based around the slippery boggle who can’t be interacted with by its opponent and forces the game into odd corners
  • Infect – uses the Infect mechanic to deliver poison unremovable poison counters that kill opponents outright
  • Soul Sisters – White decks based around little white creatures who all trigger off each other coming into play to provide constant life gain and powerful attacks
  • Bant – uses the tempo and efficiency of White/Green/Blue to keep on the offensive and block opponents spells
