All this month we’re looking at different aspects of LGBT culture in comic books in honour of LGBT History month. While it’s been a positive journey so far it wouldn’t be honest to write about this period in history without covering the bad points as well. Today we’re looking at ComicsGate.
ComicsGate define themselves as “…an online movement that believes the comic book industry (especially publishers Marvel and DC) is oversaturated by political messaging that appeals explicitly to only one demographic that is not interested in the medium, to the detriment of the existing consumer base and the industry as a whole.”
In other words: it’s a group of sexist, racist, homophobic “fans” who can’t cope with anything that doesn’t put their needs front and centre, or that people who don’t look like them might be interested in comics.
