2017 saw the publishing of both Metal and Doomsday Clock, each in their own way referencing the DC Multiverse and each hinting at a deeper background to DC comics. What is the Multiverse though, and do you need to know any of this history to enjoy the current books?
DC Comics are set during defined ages: currently it’s DC Rebirth, previously the New 52, before that there was pre/post Flashpoint. Each of these eras has allowed unique stories to be told within defined continuities and each has its favourite among fans and each tends to have its own event that begins and ends each chapter.
These events are often known as a Crisis and link together to form an ongoing backstory to the DC universe that, while not mandatory to understand the comics of the day, knit together to create the overarching story of DC Multiverse.
